Earlier Bangalore University was referred to as the Central College which was set up in the year of 1886 by the British Government which was intended towards awarding the university degrees. From the Central College this university was name of Bangalore University which was further recognized by the UGC, University-Grants-Commission on 10^th July 1964. Its name was changed by the State Government of Mysore which was intended towards taking the higher education to the next level in the Bangalore city. The university at present has been operating from the two campuses the one of which is known as the Central College Campus and another campus is known as the Bharathi Campus.
Two earlier colleges known as the Central College and the UVCE (University-Visvesvaraya-College-of-Engg both were included in this university. However, following the Karnataka-State-Open-Universities Ordinance of 1975 which mandated towards the bringing uniformity in the universities situated all across the state. This compelled the university to lose its federal character. Soon after that it became the university affiliated by the state. In the year of 1973 this university further moved to the campus of Jnana-Bharathi-Campus which is spread over the sprawling area of 1100 acre. It is this university which is considered to be the originator of Visvesvaraya-Technological-University (VTU). This university is also supposed to bring the universities like Rajiv-Gandhi-University-of-Health-Sciences and NIMHN that is National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences.
This university has the recognition for offering the largest number of Ph.D in the country. Bangalore University faculty is the most educated one.
